Programs and Services

Athletics (See Also Sports for additional information.) Edison has both girls' and boys' sports teams that compete against other schools.

Music/Drama Edison School Performances are held on campus in the Thomas A. Edison Auditorium.

Student Leadership The 5th-6th grade student body will select student council executive officers, as well as room representatives from each class. The Jr. High (7th and 8th) student body will elect executive officers as well as a room representative from each homeroom class. Elections for Jr. High and Grades 5-6 Student Councils will be held in September.

Family Life Education Community Health Center of Kern County provides our school with an experienced, thoroughly trained, paraprofessional to teach Family Life Education to our Jr. High Students. Self-esteem, decision making, behavior and communication, families, sayng "NO" to peer pressure, puberty, being a parent, abstinence, sexually transmitted diseases, and AIDS are some of the topics discussed. Parent's written permission is required for all students participating in this program.

Camp Keep Camp K.E.E.P. is a program that allows sixth grade students the privilege to enjoy the unique educational experience of the Kern Environmental Education Program. The students travel to Montano de Oro State Park, just south of Morro Bay, to take part in a science curriculum which emphasizes the environment.

D.A.R.E. Edison Middle School is proud to be making every effort to combat the drug problem facing our society. One of our programs in this effort is D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistant Education).

Title I Reading Program Two instructional assistants will be available to help students who are having difficulties in reading and math. The Jr. High students with reading and/or difficulties will receive additional help by means of a "pull-out" program.

Resource Specialist Program (R.S.P.) The Resource Specialist Program provides instruction and services for those individuals with exceptional needs who are assigned to a regular classroom for the majority of the school day.   

Student Assistance Team (SAT) A Student Assistance Team is available at Edison to help students who are having problems with school life.

Speech- Language Services

Tamara Van Dam is the Speech-Language Pathologist for Orangewood Elementary School, Edison Middle School, and the preschools in the District. Children receive treatment for expressive and receptive language, stuttering, voice, phonological processing, articulation, and social difficulties. This is her 7th year with Edison School District. She earned her Masters Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology, a B.A. in Liberal Studies, a credential in Communication Science Disorders, and a multiple subjects credential from Chico State University. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA).
Jemilyn Ancheta is the Speech-Language Pathologist assistant. She received her B.A. from University of the Pacific in Communication and plans to continue her education for three additional years in Speech-Language Pathology and receive her Masters Degree.
